Pirate Step Supreme

2009 was a good year for dubstep. In fact, from my perspective it was actually the best one so far - this was the year where the hype started to die down and the good things started to float to the surface. Different genres are now beginning to form out of the mass of basslines while the "Hey look! I figured how to operate the LFO effects in ableton live and I love it too much!" style of dubstep, way too dominant up until now, will at least be confined to the more specific Boregore-wannabe kids' part of dubstep, rather than rule its every part.

Enter the pirate: Out of the many excellent tracks that made 2009 a year for dubstepping, one track specifically made yours truly's fingers flex for the chance to press the play button - "The Chase" by Jack Sparrow (yes, that is his chosen name).

The Leeds-based, pirate-named producer is Tectonic's rising star, and in "The Chase" he had ingeniously put together a rolling dubstep track full of dark echoing voodoo energies with a briliant mixture of a tribal vibe and a minimalistic space feel - strangely fit for listening at home as well as chaos-making on a dancefloor.

And there you have it - my favourite dubstep track of 2009. Just press play on the youtube player to get your mind kicked:

And here's an interview with him on BBC. Now get this when he's asked about the Leeds dubstep scene:

"... and now there’s a handful of local DJs making moves on the scene. We're all really good mates, it's a real community vibe going on - we all just like dubstep. What's special though is that we're all from broad backgrounds musically. I just want to see more of the boys getting abroad and spreading the Leeds vibe..."

Now doesn't this sound like Jerusalem or what?
